Advances in Neural Information Processing Systems 8: Proceedings of the 1995 Conference $16.32 The past decade has seen greatly increased interaction between theoretical work in neuroscience, cognitive science and information processing, and experimental work requiring sophisticated computational modeling. The 152 contributions in NIPS 8 focus on a wide variety of algorithms and architectures for both supervised and unsupervised learning. They are divided into nine parts: Cognitive Science, Neuroscience, Theory, Algorithms and Architectures, Implementations, Speech and Signal Processing, Vision, Applications, and Control.Chapters describe how neuroscientists and cognitive scientists use computational models of neural systems to test hypotheses and generate predictions to guide their work. This work includes models of how networks in the owl brainstem could be trained for complex localization function, how cellular activity may underlie rat navigation, how cholinergic modulation may regulate cortical reorganization, and how damage to parietal cortex may result in neglect.Additional work concerns development of theoretical techniques important for understanding the dynamics of neural systems, including formation of cortical maps, analysis of recurrent networks, and analysis of self- supervised learning.Chapters also describe how engineers and computer scientists have approached problems of pattern recognition or speech recognition using computational architectures inspired by the interaction of populations of neurons within the brain. Examples are new neural network models that have been applied to classical problems, including handwritten character recognition and object recognition, and exciting new work that focuses on building electronic hardware modeled after neuralsystems. Amiga Demos $56.99 Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Amiga demos are demos created for the Commodore Amiga home computer. A “demo” is a demonstration of the multimedia capabilities of a computer (or more to the point, a demonstration of the skill of the demo’s constructors). There was intense rivalry during the 1990s among the best programmers, graphic artists and computer musicians to continually outdo each other’s demos. Since the Amiga’s hardware was more or less fixed (unlike today’s PC industry, where arbitrary combinations of hardware can be put together), there was competition to test the limits of that hardware and perform theoretically “impossible” feats by refactoring the problem at hand. The Amiga was the undisputed leader of mainstream multimedia computing in the late 1980s and early 1990s, though it was inevitably overtaken by PC architecture. |

An integrated platform for Physical and Virtual Intelligent Sensors. $108 Intelligent sensors are investigated as part of an integrated systems approach. This approach has resulted in the development of two types of sensors: Physical Intelligent Sensors (PIS) and Virtual Intelligent Sensors (VIS). The integrated systems approach, as implemented in the PIS, treats the sensor as a complete system with its own sensing hardware (the traditional sensor), A/D converter, processing and storage capabilities, software drivers, self-assessment algorithms and communication protocols. The VIS is the virtual counterpart of the PIS where the algorithms reside on the main computer and is the main focus of this thesis. The VIS is used where it is impossible to place a PIS as well as a test platform for algorithms before downloading them to the PIS. The immediate application is the monitoring of rocket test stands at NASA’s Stennis Space Center, but the technology should be generally applicable to the Integrated Systems Health Monitoring (ISHM) vision. This thesis outlines progress made in the development of intelligent sensors by describing the work done to date on Virtual Intelligent Sensors (VIS) with implementation in the LabVIEW environments. The VIS has been designed to mirror the operations of the PIS, and uses existing anomaly detection routines developed at NASA. This thesis also focuses on smart sensors, and shows the working of an enhanced version of a previously developed intelligent sensor algorithm, DATA-SIMLAMT, called Enhanced DATA-SIMLAMT or EDATA-SIMLAMT. This new version contains additional properties and states for improved data interpretation. The additional properties are based on a signal processing tool known as wavelet analysis. The major advantage provided by adding wavelet analysis is the ability to detect sudden transitions as well as get a handle on the frequency content using a much smaller data set then that required by the traditional Fourier transform method. |

Architecture Description Languages $112.38 Architecture Description Languages is an essential reference for both academic and professional researchers in the field of system engineering and design. The papers presented in this volume were selected from the workshop of the same name that was held as part of the World Computer Congress 2004 Conference, held in Toulouse, France in August 2004. This collection presents significant research and innovative developments and applications from both academic researchers and industry practitioners on topics ranging from Semantics to Tool and Development Environments. The aim of an ADL is to formally describe software and hardware architectures. Usually, an ADL describes components, their interfaces, their structures, their interactions (structure of data flow and control flow) and the mappings to hardware systems. A major goal of such description is to allow analysis with respect to several aspects like timing, safety, reliability. The papers in this state-of-the-art volume cover such topics of interest as components, connectors, composition; semantics and formalization; verification, simulation and test; tools and development environments; standardization; industrial projects. To encourage closer interaction between academic and industrial networking research communities, the workshop welcomed academic research papers as well as industrial contributions, and both are included here. Which makes this collection important not only for ADL experts and researchers, but also for all teachers and administrators interested in ADL. |

Fry’s Electronics oldest operating store, in Palo Alto, California Current store in Sunnyvale, California Fry’s Electronics store in Downers Grove, IL Industrial revolution themed store in the City of Industry, CAIn 1972, Charles Fry sold the Fry’s Supermarkets chain for $40 million and gave a portion of the proceeds to each of his sons, John, Randy, and Dave. The Fry brothers had little interest in grocery store retailing. Instead, in 1985, they joined together with a fourth partner, Kathryn Kolder, to open the first Fry’s Electronics store at a 20,000 sq ft (1,900 m) site in Sunnyvale, California. Today, Fry’s Food and Drug stores are owned and operated by Kroger and are not affiliated with Fry’s Electronics, although they share a similar logo. The original Sunnyvale store (located near the intersection of Oakmead Parkway and Lakeside Drive) stocked numerous high-tech supplies such as integrated circuits, test and measurement equipment, and computer components, as well as software and various other types of consumer electronics. The store also sold T-shirts, technical books and magazines including Playboy. At first, approximately half the store was stocked with groceries including fresh produce, but the groceries section quickly diminished to displays of soft drinks and snack foods. The second store was in Fremont, California, on Mission Court, and pioneered the “theme” stores. It had a space theme and had many a… More: |

Developing a test harness for TagCentric. $49.99 Between 2005 and 2007, students in the Computer Science and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Arkansas developed an RFID-based asset management middleware called TagCentric, and in Spring 2007 released it as an open source prototype on SourceForge.com on the Internet. While designed for flexibility, extensibility, scalability and performance, and its basic functionality was tested before release, no real organized testing assured us it could actually scale or perform well in industrial environments like the retail industry. The objective of this thesis is to develop a “test harness” to explore the performance and scalability boundary conditions for the TagCentric application. Based on a suite of tests, it was found that TagCentric scales well to a large number of readers running on one or more nodes, that tag reads do not overwhelm the central database’s ability to record them, and that TagCentric performs better as we increase CPU and memory as the host hardware platform. |

Digital Registers $20.68 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Memory Address Register, Instruction Register, Linear Feedback Shift Register, Memory Data Register, Shift Register, Accumulator, Program Counter, Register Renaming, Latch, Register File, Processor Register, Feedback With Carry Shift Registers, Register Window, Control Register, Hardware Register, Memory Type Range Registers, Dekatron, X86 Debug Register, Flag Word, Status Register, Flags Register, Ring Counter, Flag, Index Register, Stack Register, Device Control Register, Program Status Word, Test Register, Model-Specific Register, Memory Buffer Register, Address Range Registers, Shift Register Lookup Table, Device Register, Spill Metric, Interrupt Control Register, Register Alias Table. Excerpt: In a computer ’s central processing unit (CPU ), an accumulator is a register in which intermediate arithmetic and logic results are stored. Without a register like an accumulator, it would be necessary to write the result of each calculation (addition, multiplication, shift, etc.) to main memory , perhaps only to be read right back again for use in the next operation. Access to main memory is slower than access to a register like the accumulator because the technology used for the large main memory is slower (but cheaper) than that used for a register. The canonical example for accumulator use is summing a list of numbers. The accumulator is initially set to zero, then each number in turn is added to the value in the accumulator. Only when all numbers have been added is the result held in the accumulator written to main memory or to another, non-accumulator, CPU register. An accumulator machine , also called a 1-operand machine, or a CPU with accumulator-based architecture , is a kind of CPU in whichalthough it may have several registersthe CPU always stores the results of most |

List of Soviet Computer Systems $58.99 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! This is the list of Soviet computer systems. The Russian abbreviation EVM (ЭВМ), present in some of the names below, means “электронная вычислительная машина”, literally “electronic computing machine.” The history of computing hardware in the former Soviet Bloc is somewhat different from that of the Western world. As a result of the CoCom embargo computers could not be imported in a large scale from capitalist countries. All computer hardware produced in the socialist countries was either designed locally or had been illegally copied from Western models by the intelligence agencies, tacitly studied, and reproduced. This redevelopment led to some incompatibilities with IEC and IEEE standards, such as Integrated circuit pins on 2.5 mm spacing instead of 2.54 (0.1 inch) spacing. This made Soviet chips unsaleable on the world market outside the Comecon, and made test machinery more expensive. |

Lotus SmartSuite: Lotus 1-2-3, IBM Lotus SmartSuite, IBM Lotus Organizer, IBM Lotus Word Pro, IBM Lotus Freelance Graphics, IBM Lotus Ap $7.79 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Lotus 1-2-3 is a spreadsheet program from Lotus Software (now part of IBM). It was the IBM PC’s first “killer application”; its huge popularity in the mid-1980s contributed significantly to the success of the IBM PC in the corporate environment. Lotus 1-2-3 3.0 for DOS.The Lotus Development Corporation was founded by Mitchell Kapor, a friend of the developers of VisiCalc. 1-2-3 was originally written by Jonathan Sachs, who had written two spreadsheet programs previously while working at Concentric Data Systems, Inc. To aid its growth, in the UK, and possibly elsewhere, Lotus 1-2-3 was the very first computer software to use television consumer advertising. 1-2-3 was released on January 26, 1983, started outselling then-most-popular VisiCalc the very same year, and for a number of years was the leading spreadsheet for the DOS operating system. Unlike Microsoft Multiplan, it stayed very close to the model of VisiCalc, including the “A1″ letter and number cell notation, and slash-menu structure. It was free of notable bugs, and was very fast because it was programmed entirely in x86 assembly language and bypassed the slower DOS screen input/output functions in favor of writing directly to memory-mapped video display hardware. This reliance on the specific hardware of the IBM PC led to 1-2-3 being utilized as one of the two litmus test applications for true 100% compatibility when PC clones started to appear in the early- to mid- 80s. 1-2-3 was used to test general application compatibility, with Microsoft Flight Simulator being used to test graphics compatibility. Because all of a spreadsheet needs to be resident in memory, it also drove the race to utilize more memory, and extended memory and expanded memory techniques were need… More: |

Pneumatic Drives: System Design, Modelling and Control $219 This book is a comprehensive work on all aspects of pneumatic drives. It bridges the gap between classical descriptions of pneumatic systems in terms of their steady-state behaviour and the wish of design engineers to test their design before setting up the actual hardware. The book covers the whole range of today’s technology for pneumatic drives.Starting with a wide selection of linear actuators – among them standard and rodless cylinders, bellows and diaphragm cylinders –, semi-rotatory drives and air motors are described in detail. Standard directional control valves, analogue valves as well as pressure control valves are covered, including their design, application and modelling. Several control schemes and the necessary converters like solenoids or piezoelectric actuators are presented. In addition to drives for factory automation and automotive applications the technology for the process industry like positioners or spring-and-diaphragm actuators is described. The wish to analyse the design beforehand requires a mathematical description for computer simulation. Therefore, the book presents the basic laws of nature as well as the design and the modes of operation of pneumatic components to derive the modelling equations. It further covers several control strategies like binary mode cylinder drives or position controlled drives and computer aided analysis of complex systems. The book is a unique resource and valuable reference for both, scientists and graduate students as well as professional engineers who need to design and control pneumatic drives. |

Software Engineering with Obj: Algebraic Specification in Action $197.63 Software Engineering with OBJ: Algebraic Specification in Action is a comprehensive introduction to OBJ, the most widely used algebraic specification system. As a formal specification language, OBJ makes specifications and designs more precise and easier to read, as well as making maintenance easier and more accurate. OBJ differs from most other specification languages not just in having a formal semantics, but in being executable, either through symbolic execution with term rewriting, or more generally through theorem proving. One problem with specifications is that they are often wrong. OBJ can help validate specifications by executing test cases, and by proving properties. As well as providing a detailed introduction to the language and the OBJ system that implements it, Software Engineering with OBJ: Algebraic Specification in Action provides case studies by leading practitioners in the field, in areas such as computer graphics standards, hardware design, and parallel computation. The case studies demonstrate that OBJ can be used in a wide variety of ways to achieve a wide variety of practical aims in the system development process. The papers on various OBJ systems also demonstrate that the language is relatively easy to understand, implement, and use, and that it supports formal reasoning in a straightforward but powerful way. Software Engineering with OBJ: Algebraic Specification in Action will be of interest to students and teachers in the areas of data types, programming languages, semantics, theorem proving, and algebra, as well as to researchers and practitioners in software engineering. |

Stencil Buffer $42 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! A stencil buffer is an extra buffer, in addition to the color buffer (pixel buffer) and depth buffer (z-buffering) found on modern computer graphics hardware. The buffer is per pixel, and works on integer values, usually with a depth of one byte per pixel. The depth buffer and stencil buffer often share the same area in the RAM of the graphics hardware. In the simplest case, the stencil buffer is used to limit the area of rendering (stenciling). More advanced usage of the stencil buffer makes use of the strong connection between the depth buffer and the stencil buffer in the rendering pipeline. For example, stencil values can be automatically increased/decreased for every pixel that fails or passes the depth test. |
